Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

Time to Move Forward

Let me first congratulate thewinners from yesterday's elections.  I do not envy the challenges that lie ahead for you.  I sometimes wonder why I thought about getting involved.

I am sure that I am not the only person thankful that the election season is over.  No more phone calls, nor more tv ads and no more radio ads. I read that close to $3.7 BILLION dollars is going to be spent on these midterm elections. (http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2010/02/midterm-elections-will-cost-at.html).  With all of the talk about the debt and spending, I thought that this was a huge number,

Now that the last ballots have been cast and counted, it is time that the candidates put their money where their mouth is.  Every single candidate that I heard, said that they were going to reach across the aisle and do what is best for all of the people. I am sure that my needs are different then yours, but I expect all of government to have my best interest at heart when a decision is made.

It is time to end the devisive rhetoric.  The people have spoken.  Everyone of these elected officials needs our support.  We do not need the left and/or the right immediately bashing the winners.  We do not need people to openly state that they want the candidates to fail, even before they have spent their first day in office.  I often think of the Abraham Lincoln quote:

"A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.

Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South."

While we are not fighting the slavery issue, we fighting amongst ourselves. We are a divided nation and this can not be healthy as we come back from our economic issues.

In my life, I can only recall this country united together as one, once.  The immediate days after September 11.  But that did not last, people were looking to place the blame on the Republicans who were in office. Still others wanted to blame the Democrats who just left office.  I was just a baby in my moms arms when President Kennedy was assasinated, so I have no recollection of this time, but I am sure that feeling of one lasted longer then a week.

While free speech is an important freedom for being an American, there comes a time that this speech needs to be used to unite, not divide.
