Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

If You're not at the Table, then You're on the Menu

This was a statement from a praticipant at a resent Policy Summit I attended.  I was afforded the opportunity at attend the summit and  meet with over 30 Groups who are focused on Disability Issues throughout the state to come up with a unified message for the new Administration coming into Madison in January. By no means was this every group.

While my primary focus has been on developmental disability issues, it was great to hear how other groups are working to ensure that their groups are also represented to develop this message.

It is good to know that so many groups within the disability community take the time to come together to work on presenting a unified message.  I am a firm believer that one voice, representing a wide variety of groups is much louder than many smaller groups working on a variety of issues.

As the BPDD is progressing through the State Plan, it is kind of interesting how our public listening session results compared to the other groups.  In some instances we were right on, in others,  there were issues that we did not hear a lot about.

While the "if you're not at the table; then you're on the menu" statement certainly applies to this meeting, I think it is important to apply this philosophy to every day life,  It certainly pertains to your local government.  If people do not get involved, then they can only sit back and let whatever happens happen.  If you do not like is happening, then you need to speak up and be willing to do something about the issues.

Ask your self, are you at the table? Or are you on the menu?
