Are You Sure, There Are No Union Thugs?

Union, Wisconsin

Must be the angry, violent tea party....

Oh, wait no it is the Wisconsin State Employees Union, AFSCME Council 24

As you will see, Neutral means 'NO'!

Cue the Godfather theme while reading it!

It is unfortunate that you have chosen “not” to support public workers rights in Wisconsin.  In recent past weeks you have been offered a sign(s) by a public employee(s) who works in one of the state facilities on the Union Grove area.  These signs simply said, “This Business Supports Workers Rights”, a simple, subtle and we feel non-controversial statement given the facts at this time.

The members of AFSCME WSEU Local 892 represents 700 plus employees who work at Southern Wisconsin Center, South Wisconsin Veteran’s Home, Southern Oaks Girls School and Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Cemetery.  Additionally, AFSCME WSEU Local 3777 represents 650 people between Roberts E. Ellsworth Correctional Center (Union Grove), Racing Correctional Institution (Sturtevant) Racine Youthful OffenderCorrectionalFacility (Racine) and Kenosha Correctional Center. There are also as additional 300 members of Local 2180 UW-Parkside and Local 2748 which covers P&P agents in the tri-county area.  200 people from these facilities live in Union Grover proper.  Another 150 of these members lives in either Dover or Yorkville townships.  And the rest either work and travel through the Union Grove area at one time or another.  This does not include management who have also recently been adversely affected by recent political actions.  Of the 1,350 union members mention3d they have a combined yearly income of $56,160,000.  The Governor and recent Republican actions have taken 6.7 million dollars away from these 1,350 employees.  Overall public employees (9000 plus) in Racine county alone are losing over $26,000,000 in income in the next year.  This is due to increases in health care and pension contributions, which “could’ve” been negotiated.

The recent actions taken on the Governor’s budget repair bill have taken more from workers than dollars.  It took away our right to bargain things such as; sick leave and how it is used, vacation and how it is used, overtime and how it is “fairly” distributed.  Our grievance procedure has been virtually destroyed.  These are things that make life working in a 24/7 facility tolerable.  It limited our chance to get wage increases.  Which by the way, have been 2006-0%, 2007-0%, 2008-0%, 2009-0%, 2010-(-3%) 2011 (to July 1st)-(-3%.  If you don’t believe these figures just ask anyone who works for the state, they’ll tell you it’s true.  Or you can contract me and I’ll get you the data.  The last “good” raise a state employee got was roughly 3% in 1999.  These contractual rights are truly what we hold near and dear in our facilities.  They bring order to the chaos that is running a 24/7 facility.  It has also been the mutually agreed upon way of doing business between labor and management in these facilities for the last 50 years or at least since their opening.  State employees fully expect to take some lumps financially in these tough economic times, we have offered and we will.  But don’t take away rights to what has kept workplace peace for half a century and has worked well.

With that we’d ask that you reconsider taking a sign and stance to support public employees in this community.  Failure to do so will leave us no choice but do a public boycott of your business.  And sorry, neutral means “no” to those who work for the largest employer in the area and are union members.

If you have questions or a desire to get off our boycott list please call 878-4488 and leave a message or contact me.  Thanks.

Jim Parrett, Field Rep.

AFSCME Council 24
