Guest Blog by Carrie Hollenbeck (my wife) - Why is it a Good Friday?

Easter, Guest Blog, Holiday

I didn't really understand why we called the day Jesus died on the cross "Good Friday".  What was so "good" about it?  Growing up, Easter was the "good" day, not only because the Easter bunny came, but it was a day we went to church and were able to yell several times, "Christ is Risen.  He has Risen Indeed"!

Good Friday wasn't a good day.  Church was dark and solemn.  When I left church, I felt cold and empty.  Yet only a few days later would I walk into church and it seemed like the stained glass windows were lit up by the sun so bright.

On this Good Friday, I remember some of the thoughts I had growing up.  How could this man allow himself to be humiliated and tortured?  How did Jesus know he really was the Son of God?  How did this man know that God would save him?  Did Jesus really understand why his Father allowed him to suffer so?

God loves us so much that he allowed his Son to suffer in order for our sins to be forgiven.

Today is a time to reflect on how Jesus suffered on the cross with a crown of thorns stuck in his head, with his hands nailed to the cross.  He hung there and suffered so that our sins can be forgiven and that we may one day be welcomed into the House of the Lord.

It really is a Good Friday after all.
