What ever happened to smelt fishing on Lake Michigan?

When I was younger, I used to go down to the Russell Ave. piers to watch the people go smelt fishing. On Jones Island there were also smelt fishermen. I also remember the Cobia being docked at the Russell Ave. piers. In Spring, when it started to warm up a bit, the smelt fishermen would set up their nets and pull in a lot of smelt. The Deer Creek stream that is in our water system, drains at the Russell Ave. piers into Lake Michigan. In recent times, nothing is ever said about smelt fishing. Maybe the Coho Salmon are eating up all of the smelt and there is no longer a smelt run. At least the alewife population is diminished by the big game fish. Some day, go to the library and read about the smelt fishing on the shores of Lake Michigan.  Please support the Bay View community.
