I hope this letter finds its way to you and you are enjoying the finer things once again. I can picture you now, fishing on your favorite lake with the sun glistening off the water. I bet you’re catching record size blue gills everyday . I'm glad to know that you are feeling better now and no longer having to endure the pain and side effects of the treatments that made you ill for so many years. I have to smile when I think of the time you lost all your hair and when it did grow back, you went such a long time without getting a hair cut. You said you earned those long locks, and were not going to get it cut, for it was a symbol of what you overcame. I was so very proud of your strength and positive attitude during the time you were so sick with cancer.
This year marks the 15th year since I have been able to say “Happy Fathers Day” to you in person. Though you can’t be here with me and my sister Wende, we both know in our hearts if there was a way you could make it here for a visit , you would. Even though we can't spend this day together I wanted to make sure you knew how much we love you and what a great Father you have been to us. As I reminisce about growing up I can't think of anyone that would have been a better Father to us than you . Even though you worked such hard and long hours providing a nice home and everything we could ever want or need you still made time to be there for us. You were never too tired or too busy to play with us or help us with homework when we needed it.
Remember when we stayed up late every night for two weeks helping me learn how to improve my handwriting? I had such a hard time when I was young and my handwriting was so sloppy then. You had patience with me even though I was so frustrated and in tears trying. You kept telling me that with practice I would get better and someday would even be great at it. By the end of the last week I was so much better and I owe it all to you . You always were so kind and patience with a heart full of love and understanding.
As I was working in my garden today I found myself thinking about you and the times I spent helping you work in your garden when I was younger. You were such an avid gardener and always grew the most spectacular vegetables and flowers. Thank you for allowing me to be your shadow while you worked in the garden, and showing me so much about gardening. To this day I enjoy working in the garden, and its one of the most relaxing and rewarding of my hobbies that I enjoy doing. My tomatoes last year were very close to those huge Beefsteak ones you had grown back in 1978. I’ve been trying for years to grow them as big and delicious, maybe this year will be my year ! Im so greatful to you for all the things you introduced me to , the arts, music ,sports ,cooking, reading and writing to name a few.
On this Fathers Day and on every day I’m thinking of you Dad. I’m grateful for all the love , patience and understanding you gave to me and in turn taught me to have towards others in my life. As long as I live my life this way, I know we will see each other again some day in Heaven.
Happy Father’s Day, I love you and miss you Dad.
