South Milwaukee Wal-Mart, Cleanup & Taxes

Most people know that I am pro-Wal-Mart.  That isn’t a secret!  One would only need to remember the Wal-Mart Now forum comment section, look back at my blog posts, or know that I was the lead Cudahy citizen on the Wal-Mart group to know that.  It really comes down that I am pro-business.  I would support ShopKo just as much and hard.


One thing about Wal-Mart in Cudahy that former Mayor McCue (remember he wasn’t a fan of Wal-Mart) and I agreed upon was that Wal-Mart doesn’t need taxpayer money to subsidize development!  It doesn’t matter if it is in Cudahy or Battle Creek Michigan.  They have deep pockets and can pay for cleanup of land, building, and development on the land and so on.


Well it would seem that in South Milwaukee the taxpayers are going to be helping to subsidize the cleanup so Wal-Mart can build there.

The South Milwaukee Common Council has approved a plan to provide up to $1.8 million in financing to Gatlin Development Co., which plans to build a $12 million supermarket and discount store that Walmart will lease.


The property taxes generated by the 115,000-square-foot store, planned for 10 acres west of Chicago Ave., and one block south of College Ave., would repay that amount over approximately nine years, said Danielle Devlin, executive director of the city’s Community Development Authority.  The money would be provided to Gatlin through an existing tax incremental financing district.


City officials decided the money was needed because environmental cleanup costs for the site were greater than initially estimated, Devlin said.


An estimated $800,000 is needed to clean up 3.5 acres owned by the city, with $500,000 for clean-up work on 6.5 acres owned by an investment group led by Briohn Building Corp. Gatlin is buying both parcels.


The agreement calls for providing another $500,000 if needed, Devlin said.


Now some people will say this is TIF money and that is different.  NO it isn’t.


Since Wal-Mart coming to Cudahy isn’t going to happen mostly because our CDA, Common Council, Economic Development Team, and Mayor are not on the same page on development in Cudahy (another blog post soon), I hope Wal-Mart does goes in South Milwaukee.  Hey it is Cudahy’s loss.


But it doesn’t need to cost the taxpayers of South Milwaukee for that to happen!


South Milwaukee is going to hold public hearings on Wal-Mart, development and the TIF money.


What I am asking the taxpayers of South Milwaukee to do is go to the public hearings and let your voice be heard.  Tell them you want the Wal-Mart, but you don’t want to pay for it.


Hey when Wal-Mart was going to build in Cudahy they didn’t ask nor receive taxpayer money, in fact they were going to provide many things that in the past I detailed to the City of Cudahy.


So please show up and voice your thoughts.
