Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

Part Time Mayor Thoughts

Last week, while attending the Partners in Policymaking class, I was asked about my run for Mayor of Cudahy with one of the co-facilitators.  We talked about it for a bit, I was then asked if I was planning on running again.  I responded that I did not think so.  I explained that I was extremely happy in my current job. I enjoy helping individuals achieve their desired outcomes.  I feel that I am beginning to make a difference in the disability community as a more vocal and confident advocate.  I also want to use the Partners class to help me in achieving one of my goals for my son, creating a picture ballot for him to use when he votes. At this point of my life I do not see any need to change what I am doing.

As the week progressed, the talk of a part time Mayor came up.  I expressed to my alderman my thoughts.  I also shared them with my friend Randy Hollenbeck.  I attempted to go to the meeting on Thursday night to listen to the proposal and share my thoughts.  I got stuck in traffic coming from Madison and I missed the presentation, I caught the last 15-20 minutes of the evening.  I listened to what others had to say.  Since I missed the presentation, I did not feel comfortable speaking up if my questions had already been addressed.  I am hoping to attend more of the committee meetings now that I know they will be the last Thursday of each month at 5:30.

I did speak to Mayor Day after the presentation and I did ask him my 2 main questions.  Who would have authority over the Common Council and be the chief decision maker, Mayor Day said the Mayor would still hold that authority.  My second question was in regards to limiting the pool of potential Mayoral candidates if the position were to be made part time.  If an individual has a full time job that pays the bills and provides the insurance for the family, what is this person’s first priority supposed to be?  Let’s say the individual has to choose between working late or attending a Common Council meeting, what is in the best interest of the individual?

I do not believe that a part time Mayor is the way to go.  Who better to be the cheerleader for the City, than somebody who lives here?  But as long as the exploratory process is not costing the taxpayers of Cudahy anything, I am open to looking at the proposal.  It is my understanding that this would be put to a referendum for the citizens to decide.

I was asked this weekend my thoughts on the part time Mayor proposal and I shared them as I have above.  When I was asked about the possibility of running again, as I have said above also, I explained that I am now beginning to feel that I am making a difference in the Disability Advocacy area and I feel really good about the direction my life’s journey is taking me.  The individual asked me if I felt that I could make a difference in the disability field, imagine what a difference I could make for Cudahy.

It did make me stop and wonder, what if
