Last Sunday, two teams from South Milwaukee were among 23 to compete in the First Lego League robotics qualifying tournament at Marquette High School in Milwaukee.
One group from South Milwaukee, the "Believers," was a veteran, award-winning team that has competed in past years.
This year, the "Believers", sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast and whose members attend Blakewood Elementary School, got the top award for research and received overall scoring that qualified the team to advance to the state level. That competition will be in early December.
The other team, the "Rockets Robotics," was sponsored by the South Milwaukee Middle School Parents Advisory Council. This novice team, with only one member who had any previous robotics experience, made an exemplary showing. In the three areas of judging. In its project presentation, the team earned top ratings on six of the ten assessed elements and good ratings in the remaining four. They received mostly good ratings in robot design and in understanding the FLL's core values. In the separate robot performance competition, the team held its own near the middle of the field of far more experienced teams.
Congratulations to these young people in their hard work and outstanding accomplishments, and best wishes to the "Believers" as they compete in the state tournament.
