Steve Taylor has received campaign donations from The Rock

One of the hot issues in Franklin these days, maybe the hottest is whether The Rock will build a minor league baseball stadium at its site, and whether it will/should do so with city of Franklin financing.

On the eve of Franklin’s mayoral election, a check of candidate Steve Taylor’s campaign contribution records (open public records) from his January Continuing Report, Pre-Primary Report, and Pre-Election Report show employees from The Rock have contributed $2,450 to his campaign.

Let’s be clear. There’s nothing wrong with these donations. In fact, the donors are to be commended for exercising their First Amendment rights and getting involved in the political process.

However, Steve Taylor as an elected city official with control over the city budget and city spending currently sits on a task force to determine if and how much money goes from the city to the Rock for a potential new stadium.

Can Steve Taylor act in an unbiased fashion in deciding the question of city funding for a Rock stadium given he’s received $2,450 in campaign contributions from The Rock?

Is that a reasonable question to ask? I certainly think so.

For the record, Taylor’s opponent, Steve Olson has received no campaign donations from anyone associated with The Rock.
