This Just In ...

I couldn't wait to vote YES Tuesday

I was visiting with my mother in her south side Milwaukee living room many, many years ago when there came a knock on the door. My mother cringed a bit.

Not to worry, I assured her.  I’ll answer it.

A woman introduced herself informing me she was running for the Milwaukee County Board.  I replied that my mother lived here, that I was her son, and that she paid close attention to local politics (she did) and would be extremely interested in this race.

I was given the standard “Why I’m running” routine.  And then I started to ask questions.

You understand, I said to the woman, that this area has been inundated with crime.

Yes, she answered. That was a common concern she had been hearing as she went door to door.

Taxes and wasteful spending are big problems, I continued. My mother is a widow, living on a fixed income and has real difficulties making ends meet. Her taxes are horrible with little to show for it.

Oh, yes, we have to bring those in line especially for the elderly the woman at the front door tried to reassure.

Please look into the waste. There’s plenty at county government I said.  Once again she agreed.

I was friendly and respectful. Look, I said. I’m involved in politics. I know the game. Candidates talk a good game when they’re running. They even claim to be tough on crime and fiscally sound, and then when elected, they jump ship.

Oh, no, she said. She understood the issues and economic climate at hand and would work hard to protect folks like my mother.

I doubt Peggy West (now known as Peggy Romo West) will remember that conversation.  I was just another face she tried to deceive on her trip through the district. But I sure remember.

She would be elected and sits on the County Board to this day. From the day she got in to today she has done nothing about crime, nothing about high taxes, nothing to curb spending.

Peggy Romo West is best known for becoming a national embarrassment. But for me, that wasn’t her most egregious offense.

Peggy Romo West betrayed me. Even worse, she betrayed my mother, now deceased.

On Tuesday, I happily voted YES to make Milwaukee County Board members part-time in salary. That vote was for you, Mom.
