Kevin Fischer is a veteran broadcaster, the recipient of over 150 major journalism awards from the Milwaukee Press Club, the Wisconsin Associated Press, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, and others. He has been seen and heard on Milwaukee TV and radio stations for over three decades. Dale Pforr of Franklin would not approve. He wrote to the Journal Sentinel this week that folks like us are violating flag etiquette and cheapening all the Stars and stripes stand for:

The PBS Memorial Day Concert from Washington, D.C., featured an emcee wearing a tie made in the image of the flag. I turned it off. I also turned off the local TV weatherman for the same reason. Shirts and shorts that look like re-sewn flags give me the same turn-it-off feeling.

The use of the flag's image as apparel and decorations cheapens the meaning of all that the flag symbolizes.

Obviously Mr. Pforr cares deeply about our great country. So do we.

Jim Hahn of Wauwatosa offers a rebuttal in today’s paper: Flag shirts can inspire.

The Fischer family highly recommends a visit here.

Finally, I respect Mr. Pforr's feelings. However, I believe he overreacts. I urge a look at a blog I posted on Flag Day in 2011, especially the video of debate in the US House over flag desecration.
