We should honor our country's labor force on Labor Day

On Labor Day, we should thank all of the workers in this country for doing their work to keep our economy going. Without our labor unions, we would be in dire times. For over 100 years, our labor unions have come to protect the workers and to promote safety and security on the job. Think of the past when we had no unions, and what life was like then. You earned minimum wages with no benefits. If you missed work, you could be replaced by somebody else. No job was safe under these conditions. Many workers were injured on the job, and lost their jobs as a result of this. Management had no mercy on the labor force that it hired. Look back to 1886, and read about the strike for an eight hour work day, that ended up with the strikers being fired upon by the State Militia with Governor Jerimiah Rusk being in command of the troops. We should not take our unions for granted. They are only as strong as their membership. I for one have been a member of the NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers) Branch 2 for over forty years. We need our unions, but management hates them. Unions mean less profit for management. Support you local unions and join a union if you don't already belong to one. In unity there is hope for us all. Have a happy Labor Day Weekend with your family.
