RFID Tags May Shut Down Life Support Machines

Health, Info

Just when most hospitals in the U.S. have opened up the use of cell phones/PDA/Smart phones comes a claim from Europe that RFID chips may have an adverse effect on lifesaving equipment in hospitals, according to Dutch scientists.  The chips are used to not only track people, but also machinery, and the radio frequency may shut down hospital equipment.

However, there are two types of RFID, and doctors in Britain say that the "passive" sort of chip saves patients' lives.  Dutch scientists carried out 123 tests by holding passive RFID near hospital machinery.  In all, 34 "incidents" were reported.

24 of those were listed as being "significant" or "hazardous.”

I just wonder with more stores and manufactures in the U.S. going to RFID tags if we may have similar problems?  I know the U.S. lags in the use compared to Japan and the E.U.
