Bank Refuses to Cash Check For Armless Man Without a Thumbprint

Florida: A Bank of America branch refused to cash a check to a man born without arms without a thumbprint.  Steve Valdez offered two forms of photo identification with an address that matched the check but was told that only a thumbprint would do.

The teller, unsure how to handle the issue, called a manager who said Valdez could either open an account or bring in his wife who wrote the check.  Valdez declined both options.  A bank representative later said that accommodations should have been made.

The bank claimed that they were complying with the American with Disabilities Act with the options they offered him but these may not meet the law's prohibition on unequal treatment, segregation, and exclusion.
