Rip the Hoan Bridge Down and Extend the 794 Parkway?

Development, Roads

Now it doesn’t make sense to rip down the bridge and extend the 794 Parkway south.  Oh wait, they don’t want to rip the bridge down, yes they do, they want to make it just a street level.  So that means just a street.

Just re-deck it and extend the Parkway!  I know that runs counter to what the “NO” car crowd/Only mass transit wants to see happen.  But they might have run out of time and started too late!

I-794 extension plan may be reborn

Time running out on Hoan Bridge replacement

Lack of time and leadership have reduced prospects that the Hoan Bridge will be razed and replaced with a smaller structure in the next few years, an advocate for studying such an alternative said Wednesday at a forum on the bridge's future.

The more likely scenario is that the state Department of Transportation will replace the bridge deck and roadway atop the Hoan and maintain it for several decades, said Peter Beitzel, a vice president for the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce.

According to the transportation department, repairs on the 2.5-mile bridge over the Port of Milwaukee need to start in 2011 to head off restrictions on heavy trucks and other limitations on traffic.  To meet that time frame, engineering would have to start early next year, according to Chris Klein, executive assistant to department Secretary Frank Busalacchi.
