Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Banned on Marine Corp Bases

The US Marine Corp has moved to ban pit bulls, Rottweilers, and other breeds with "dominant traits of aggression" from any base worldwide after a number of fatal attacks on humans.  Current pets may be granted a waiver subject to a behavior test.

The Navy and Air Force do not have a blanket policy on dog breeds, instead leaving the decision up to individual base commanders.  The Army has a ban on certain breeds at private housing facilities but not at base housing.

"We're seeing breed-specific bans pretty regularly.  We're very against it.  We look at how a dog behaves.  It's a frustrating topic, said Daisy Okas from the American Kennel Club.

Pit Bull Owners Want to Remove Memorial in Their Yard for Boy That Died

Serenia Clinton will be removing a memorial for his son Justin, 10, who died on June 15 when pit bull dogs killed him on the property of owners Ricky and Christi George.  The couple is demanding its removal, saying the visitors to it disturb them.

"The district attorney is trying to find a place to put the memorial," said Serenia.  At first, poster board was used to make a cross that his fifth-grade classmates signed, but has since been replaced with a wooden one and added to a flowerpot.

"I hope that even without this small memorial, people will not forget Justin and the lessons to the public about the likelihood of substantial harm to life and health caused by this breed," she added.
