I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.
Abraham Lincoln said at his Gettysburg Address “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth”. Does this still hold true today? It seems to me that all levels of government are not of the people nor are they for the people anymore. It seems to be of the few people and for the few people. The few people are the ones with the money who donate the most money to campaigns to gain an advantage in legislation, in an effort to boost their bottom lines, which in turn boost their own pockets.
I consider myself to be very liberal socially yet conservative fiscally. I believe that the health care system needs reforming. As I look at the health care system debate. I do not agree with everything in the current plan, but we need to have some place to start. I see benefits in the plan for people with disabilities. I do not like how much it is going to cost the tax payers initially.
We need to find a way for the average person, the vast majority of people in America, to have a real say and impact on how government runs. We need to find a way for our voices to be heard and understood. As I mentioned in my last blog, part of communication is listening. I get the feeling that government hears what we have to say, but they do not listen to what is being said.
We have an election coming up on April 6 in Cudahy. We need to make sure that all citizens are ready to make an informed choice when selecting the Mayor. Once that Mayor is elected, this person is going to have his hands full in trying to resurrect Cudahy. But, We the People must be ready to accept a challenge to help this Mayor achieve success. At the same time, We the People must be ready to challenge the Mayor and all elected officials, in a respectful and professional way. We cannot sit back and just accept what is being done. There must be communication coming from 5050 S Lake Drive and it must be a two way street. Please do not tell us what we want to hear, but the truth as to what is going on.
As Randy Hollenbeck mentioned in his schools blog, to many people just sit back and do nothing. We need to act as ONE community. We need to show that We the People want to have a say so in how our government is being run. We need to start this process right here in Cudahy. Once We the People have shown how successful it can be in Cudahy, we move onto the County level, then the state level and finally the national level.
This process will not be easy for people to grasp. It will be met with resistance, but we must hold true to the values that were established over 200 years ago when our founding fathers laid the ground work for this great nation.
