Soccer tournament coming to Milwaukee in 2011

A 300-team youth soccer tournament is coming to Milwaukee in June 2011, Visit Milwaukee officials announced Monday.

The State Soccer Wars, as the tournament is called, is modeled after the State Hockey Wars, a roller hockey tournament sponsored by the same group.

The soccer tournament will be held from June 20-July 3, 2011.  The hub of the tournament will be the Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

With 300 teams and their families coming to the Milwaukee area, Visit Milwaukee organizers believe as many as 9,800 hotel rooms will be used, resulting in an economic impact of more than $6 million.

Brent Foerster, vice president of sales and marketing for Visit Milwaukee, said his group had been working to go after the sports market.  "These are family-oriented events that use hotels throughout the greater Milwaukee area and the participants have significant downtime to eat in restaurants and visit and explore our diverse offerings and attractions," Foerster said.

Tim McManus, national director of State Wars Hockey, said the Milwaukee area had all of the attributes his group was looking for: accessibility, affordable, a support network and plenty of activities.
