John Manke is an active former Bay View resident who is involved in numerous neighborhood organizations, including the Bay View Historical Society, the Humboldt Park Fourth of July Association and the Shore Shore Farmers Market. He believes Bay View has a fine tradition in its past that we do not want to lose in the future.
They ought to set up a kiosk near the Hoan Bridge to sell insurance to all users of that bridge. If they are the unlucky person who falls through the bridge when it collapses, their family can collect on their insurance policy. I do not feel that many people will actually buy this insurance, even though they may need it soon. Insurance companies might feel that the risk of the bridge collapsing is too high to consider the risk of selling this insurance. The Hoan Bridge has greatly weakened over the years with heavy vehicle use damage being the cause. Who knows how long it takes to wear out a bridge like that. The steel beams are showing corrosive damage from age and use. How much damage persists under the bridge is still unknown. The State of Wisconsin does not feel that there is a need to examine this bridge. Find out how many State politicians are willing to use the bridge in its present condition. The Zoo Freeway intersection show how much damage can be caused by wear and tear by vehicles. How much more damage can happen to the steel supports when age takes its toll. Contact your State Senators and Representatives to inquire as to when something will be done about this matter.
