Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

Carol Wantuch Award Winner

In case you missed it, Carol Wantuch, the Head of the Cudahy Health Department was recently awarded the 2010 The Wisconsin Public Health Association Lifetime Distinguished Service to Public Health Award.

Most recognize Carol as the person who lead the City Evacuation in July 2009.  What most impressed me about Carol was that at a Neighborhood Watch Meeting, Carol described the process of the evacuation.  After her talk, she mentioned that they continually evaluate the process.  Earlier this year, I asked her if the plan included people with disabilities, I was pleased to hear that it did. Carol was, and I am sure still is,  working with a Milwaukee/Waukesha County Consortium on Emergency Preparedness. My time on the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities has shown how much more we need to do for people in times of evacuation.  Carol asked if I would participate in a survey with a research company, having just met Carol once, and it was a simple hello, I felt honored to be ask to participate.  To think in a short few minutes and emails, I might have something to offer.

Here is some more of who Carol is:

Carol has been a part of the Cudahy Health Department since June 1988, prior to that she served in the Milwaukee Health Department. According to Carol, "It is a job that she loves".  Carol believes strongly in the mission of the Cudahy Health Department: Strong Families in Safe Neighborhoods with Affordable Health Care. They have promoted this mission from immunizations to communicable disease control to proper installation of child safety seats to tobacco control.

She loves the variety of public health issues, she calls them exciting and challenging. The entire Health Department learns from each event and works to improve delivery to the city.   The entire Department takes every issue very seriously.  Carol did point out that is is through the efforts of the entire health department, not just her.

Her primary issue is the health of the City, emergency response is just one aspect of the job.  I asked Carol to name what she is most proud of during her time of serving the citizens of Cudahy, other then the evacuation.  She could not just name one.  From the school surveillance program to setting up the clinicns for seasonal and H1N1 flu shots.  From assuring young children and pregnant women are protected from blood lead poisoning to assuring that the senior housing residents have access to regular nursing visits. From assuring all Cudahy restaurants are inspected to providing free health care for residents without insurance.

When I first sent Carol a congratulation, in her thank you she said that she was actually just doing her job and nothing special.  What she has done has been special to the citizens of Cudahy.
