Post Office Wants Advice on Stopping Red Ink

Public comment sought; cutting service, raising rates being considered

WASHINGTON - The post office is facing billions of dollars in losses and is considering a variety of ways to cut costs.

Both the commission that oversees the U.S. Postal Service and the post office's inspector general are seeking comment and suggestions from the public.  The post office has reduced its workforce by about 200,000 over the last few years and more cuts may be possible.

Other cost-savings being considered include eliminating Saturday mail delivery, generating revenue from new products, raising rates, closing offices and restructuring mail processing centers.

Post office proposes raising stamp price

The U.S. Postal Service wants to raise the price of a first-class stamp by 2 cents to 46 cents to avoid running out of cash next year, officials said.

A sharp decline in mail volume, the recession and increased use of the Internet to pay bills have contributed to a financial crisis.

On Tuesday, postal officials proposed mitigating the problem with an average 5.6% increase on a range of services that include first-class mail, advertising mail, periodicals and packages.  The increase, about 13 cents a month for the average household, would go into effect Jan. 2.
