Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

Cudahy Health Department

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to spend about an hour at the Cudahy Health Department.  While Carol Wantuch and her staff are probably best known for their efforts with the City Evacuation in 2009 and their H1N1 Clinic, so much more goes on in the Health Department.

Today I want to let you know about the Milwaukee County WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program that has offices within the Cudahy Health Department. WIC falls under the Department of Health and Family Services, a Division of Public Health.  Heidi Zimmer and her staff are ready to serve the needs of the Cudahy Community.  While talking with Heidi, she needed to take a call and she was able to communicate with the other party in Spanish.  I mentioned to her that I was impressed by her ability to communicate with the people in need.

Per the Milwaukee County WIC website, http://www.milwaukeecountywic.com/index.htm, WIC is a nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well, learn about nutrition and stay healthy.  WIC offers information on food and nutrition, breastfeeding information and support, diet assessments, iron screenings and information about other community resources.

One of the highlights of the program is the Stockbox.  Stockbox is another name for Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).  The Stockbox provides monthly supplemental foods, which include: cheese, canned fruits, canned vegetables, juice, cereal, dry and canned milk, peanut butter, canned meat, dried beans and rice, instant potatoes or pasta.

There are financial guidlines for the Stockbox program and they can be found by visiting the WIC website.

If you know of any family that may benefit from this program, please pass this information on to them.  We do not need to see families, especially children going hungry in this country.
