County Board panel backs cut in pension formula

Milwaukee County supervisors showed a new willingness to cut their pension benefits in a unanimous committee vote Friday.

The measure that failed in a vote by the full County Board in March has a "good shot" of winning approval following the recommendation by the Personnel Committee, said Supervisor Joe Sanfelippo, a leading proponent.

The 20% reduction in the pension calculation would match the reduction the board is seeking from the county's 5,400 workers.  The pension provision is part of the ongoing bargaining with labor unions and a key element in balancing the 2010 budget.

"We need to set an example," Sanfelippo said.  "We need to be leaders.  It's hard for us to ask for concessions when we are not willing to make them ourselves."

Reducing the supervisors' pensions, via a change in the payment formula, would save the county about $30,000 by reducing the needed contribution to the pension fund.

The proposal failed in March when the board deadlocked 7-7.  Four board members were absent from that meeting and one seat was vacant.

Sanfelippo said he expects several of those who missed that vote will support the plan on July 29 when the full board acts.
