4th of July Fireworks Safety

My friend and Fireworks expert Dean Billo asked me to post the following letter re Fireworks safety: I was hoping you could mention this in your blog. It seems to get the most reads, and I was hoping for a little exposure on this matter. My name is Dean Billo, and I am the organizer of the Cudahy 4th of July fireworks program. Along with Greg and Chris Janish, we coordinate anywhere between 15-20 hand-picked, UNPAID volunteers to coordinate and put on the show. The only reward we receive is the satisfaction of the crowd and the experience of working closely with family and friends on this great holiday. I can't express enough how proud I am of our volunteer crew. They take great pride in this community and the fact that we put on one of the greatest shows for the money in the area. Although they are not paid, they are some of the most dedicated and professional individuals I have had the pleasure to work with. I CARE ABOUT THEM AND THEIR SAFETY. That being said, we could use some help from the community. We put up a fence to keep unauthorized people out of the area. This is for their safety as well as that of the crew. We post signs in two languages warning people to stay out, warning them the bike trail is closed, and offering them a detour. Despite this, people still think it would be fun to get a closer look. This forces us to confront situations taking us away from important tasks at hand. This compromises safety. In past years, people have tried to walk up the bluff to enter the area from the lake. When confronted, one became argumentative and refused to leave the area. We were just about to do a test fire when this occurred. You never know what is going to happen beyond the fence, or when it is going to happen. 'KEEP OUT' is not a request open to interpretation. A fence is not an obstacle to overcome. Our volunteers should not be accosted for enforcing these policies to ensure the safety of the rest of the public, including their own crew members. Please, when you see the fence, the signs, stay out. When you are biking down the trail, go around. Help make this 4th of July celebration safe and enjoyable for everyone involved. Thank you in advance. Enjoy the show! Dean Billo Biology and Chemistry Teacher Assistant Trap Team Coach 4950 S Lake Dr Cudahy, WI 53110 (414) 294-2767 Dean Billo's Website

Blogger completes Half-Marathon

On Saturday, April 4, 2015 I completed the Badgerland Striders Half-Marathon. There were a lot of people and the weather was perfect. Today I feel great. My knees and ankles are fine, but my hips are a little sore. It is not pain, just the 24-36 hour soreness you get after a serious workout. I am so thankful for our beautiful County park system which made this run possible and so enjoyable! And thank you to all the Badgerland Striders volunteers! Without them it would be impossible to host a race like this. Thank you volunteers!

Striders Half-Marathon April 4

It is spring and a young man's thoughts turn to ... running! This year the Badgerland Striders will once again be hosting the Badgerland Striders Half Marathon on Saturday, April 4, 2015. The 13.1 mile course starts at South Shore Park and winds its way south through Bay View, Sheridan, Warnimont and Grant Parks. The course reaches its half-way point in Grant Park, turns and follows the same path north to the starting point. A good time is had by all. Hope to see you there! http://www.badgerlandstriders.org/home/Races/SouthShoreHalfMarathon.htm

A Fresh Start with Anytime Fitness

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 my family officially joined Anytime Fitness. The membership dues, for a family of three, are almost exactly the same as what I was paying at the South Shore Y ( within a dollar ). I am thrilled to be part of Anytime and to start fresh and put the YMCA ordeal behind me. Thank you to all the friendly staff at the South Shore Y; I hope you all have other jobs lined up. I did my first workout as an official member of Anytime: free weights, jump rope, boxing, jumping onto bench, cables and exercise machines. I feel great and look forward to continuing my athletic training with my new gym. Stay tuned for more news and HAPPY TRAILS !

Bizarre Advertising from YMCA

I gathered my mail today and was completely dumfounded to see a flyer advertising the Milwaukee YMCA. The flyer read: "Make your gym membership count. What would your gym membership mean to you if you knew it meant the world to your community? When you join the Milwaukee Y, reaching your goals helps us reach ours. So while you're getting stronger, you're strengthening Milwaukee. Now is the time to join the Milwaukee Y. Bring this postcard in for a free, one-week family membership. You won't be charged until your one-week trial ends." The flyer then goes on to list the four branches of the Milwaukee Y, none of which are even remotely close to my home. The closest is downtown Milwaukee, in which case I would have to pay for parking ( if I could even find parking at all). What the hell? I could barely believe my eyes when I saw this in my mail. Is this real? I had to check the date to make sure this was not some old piece of mail that somehow got mixed in with my mail. Yep. The date says "Offer ends Feb 14, 2015". Wow ! What a deal! I am so done with you YMCA.
