Each class is taught at Alverno College by Ray Scolavino, home brewer & chemistry teacher; hours are 6 - 9:00 PM and the cost is $42 for each. Must be 21 to attend.

Beer is the world's oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic beverage and the third most popular drink overall after water and tea. Come join us for an introduction to the various types of beers from Pilsners to Porters and all the types in between. You will learn how to distinguish the different types of beer based on appearance, aroma and of course, taste. We will also look at what goes into brewing beers (specifically hops, grains and malt) and what gives certain beers their “trademark.”

Pairing beer with food? Of course, we’re talking more than brats and burgers. We will briefly review the flavor characteristics of each type of beer. Following will be a discussion on what foods are recommended for each type. However, your own taste buds will be the judge. Join us for an evening filled with food and sampling.

Milwaukee may have a rich history in beer making, but so does the rest of the state. Wisconsin has both large breweries as well as many microbreweries. In this class learn some of the history of brewing in Wisconsin. As we journey through the state, within the confines of our classroom, we will sample the various beers produced in Wisconsin.

So you think Germany is the king of brewing in the world? Well there are a couple of other countries that would beg to differ. Take a trip around the world in one night and become familiar with beers produced outside of the U.S. We will also discuss the infamous “Germany Purity Law.” Break out of the domestic and into the imported. The beers we will taste are available in the U.S.
Wednesday April 14
Come and join us for a basic how to brew beer course. We will actually go through the process from the brew pot to the bottle. While the beer is brewing we will discuss the ingredients, procedures and kits available. Here is a chance to taste the malt and hops before they become beer. After this class you will be ready to brew your own - once you get the equipment!
